I don’t grant my confidence easily. When we are too kind or too nice, people often use and abuse. It’s best to be careful. And then, confidence is a honour which must be earned. It must be mutual, too. I don’t tell people secrets about my life or my feelings except if they’re my best friends.

I think it’s ridiculous to confide in someone we don’t know, or to say « i love you » to a boyfriend after a one-week relationship for instance.

They are a lot of TV shows about swindles which prove that people are too trusting.

In my opinion there are far too many people who trust guys who look fine whereas they are distrustful to people who don’t look very rich or don’t have good looks.

But it’s got nothing to do with confidence as such.

Even if I’m not hard as nails,I prefer to remain aloof when I meet someone and before I trust / confide in that person.

Delphine:

Firstly, I’d rather describe myself as a shy and reserved person – even though I try to make up for these drawbacks in everyday life.

In despite of this character – I might come across as a distrustful woman in a certain way– I have a tendancy to trust people that I have only just met all too easily.

However, I want to define my own notion of ‘ trust ’:

Indeed, when I trust someone I do not mean that I could confide in this person all my life, I just mean that I will not doubt him/her as long as (s)he doesn’t betray me.

Perhaps it is a naive position, but I cannot be distrustful without serious reasons.

Furthermore, I believe in heartfelt relationships even if I was sometimes disappointed in the past.

I think that these disappointments are part and parcel of human life therefore I prefer to remember sincere moments I spent instead of brooding over people who are not trustworthy.

I always try to look at the bright side of my life.

We all have to strike a happy medium / to strike a balance / to find a compromise / which makes it possible for everyone to protect themselves against the others, but also to remain open-minded.

Gorillaz is a British virtual group of music whose main leaders are Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett.

Damon Albarn is also the singer of the group Blur and he recently founded the group «  The good the bad and the queen » . We can say is a complete musician whose voice is easily recognized.

The music of Gorillaz mixes several styles like « britpop » « hip-hop » « trip-hop » and dub,etc. But Gorillaz’ fans should agree to say that Gorillaz is a style in itself.

Jamie Hewlett-who is also the man who drew of « Tankgirl » comics- creates virtual characters in a comics style corresponding to the fictionnal universe of Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn.

This virtual group is composed of 4 members: 2D ,Noodle, Murdoc and Russel who « played » in the video clip accompanying each song.

Jamie Hewlett provides each character with a personnality in relation with songs,for example Russel is a percussionnist, 2D is a singer and he plays the piano,Murdoc is the bassist…

This bias-which consists in using a virtual group- allows the real members of Gorillaz not to appears,they remained anonymous.

It’s a concept which had also been used by the french group Daft punk.

The last album released in 2005,was called « Demon day » ,and recently Damon Albarn announced that a new album should come out next year!

Today we are going to focus on the graffiti art including posters and logos, and more particulary on a major graffiti specialist known as Buff Monster.

Graffiti art is constantly changing. The artists who practice this art use new materials and techniques, they have created an original language composed of forms and images and related to contemporary graphics, design and illustration. These Artists are using new media to reflect on the urban environment, i.e. posters, stickers, collages or computer graphics.

Posters have replaced tags with more personal logos. This spontaneaous drawings, symbols and characters represent a new category of free art. Graffiti art is free – it is made by people because they want to, not because they need to. Commercial values or tastes have no sway over graffiti art.

Buff monsters used the system of stickers and posters. He doesn’t like graffiti. He draws a Buff monster’s eye-patched aliens, in pink colors. He used this color because girls like it.

This drawing is reproduced in the « Artoyz » shop, a collection of toys for adults, designed by a lot of artists. His work has been shown in many galleries, usually creating large installations to go with the paintings.

Fafi is a street artist, her work is characterized by the use of saturated colors, she always represents « candy girls » in a child’s world.

She has symbolic recurrent pattern in her work – all the girls she draws have hearts on their cheeks.

She is a provoking artist who rather prefers to tag in streets where there are a lot of people, even if she hasn’t got any authorisation – rather than to hide herself.

She began to develop her art in the street but now she has changed to become nicer – more mainstream.

Now she paints on canvas and collaborates with society like adidas, for whom she creates wears and sneakers collection.

She is one of the only women artists who succeded in the field of graffiti, with Miss Van

Miss Van’s style is similar to Fafi’s and people sometimes confuse the two artists who both explore feminity through its stereotypes.

However, the women represented by Miss Van are sexier and more provoking than Fafi’s candy girls.

Miss Van’s characters are almost naked, they have an attractive attitude and sexy looks.

She exhibits her canvases in museums, that’s why she doesn’t censure her works, contrary to the works she used to exhibit in the street for which she takes care not to shock children.

We can say that Fafi and Miss Van introduced a feminine touch in the world of graffitis, but they also changed the common idea we have about street art with the new graphic language they have invented.

In the same category, we can also note the work of Miss Kat. In fact Miss Van, Miss Kat and Fafi all began their tags in the same French town : Toulouse.

Now, they travel around the world.

From the first semester, teachers prepare us to enter the professional world  – we’re already working in autonomy.

Our first project is a videoclip to be displayed online for the open days.

The aim is to attract new potential recruits and enthuse them to join us.

The « Faculté Langues Lettres Arts et Sciences Humaines » (FLLASH) translates as « College of languages,literature,fine arts and humanities. »  The Fllash is divided into two sites: Ronzier, where  the art classes take place, and Matisse, where the other subjects are taught.

Then, we have a project class in which we must realize a poster . This project implies  working on fonts and decided on technical issues such as graphism.

The other topics are concerned with manipulating sounds and mastering specific software ( after effects,3D smax,inDesign,Photoshop,Illustrator,flash…).

At the end of the school’s year, every student of our group has to make an internship in a graphic design company

This should give every student in the class the opportunity  to start accumulating some real professional experience.

Well, that’s all for the presentation of University.

Next week, we will introduce French graphists Miss Van and Fafi to you, , and we will tell you all about the world of street art.

We are going to tell you about our daily life.

We both succeeded in our fine arts’ licence last year.

Vanessa has a A levels in Philosophy, Literature and English, and Delphine has a A levels in Maths,Biology and Chemistry .

We made acquaintances in 2005 in our first year at university,and since we have been living in each other pockets!

What Delphine likes to do in her free-time is taking care of her gold-fish and drawing. Vanessa hobbies include graphism and take time with her friends.

With our common friends,we are used to attributing a nick name to most of people we know.

For example Vanessa’s nick name is « kakahono », Delphine’s one is « carré ».

We agree that this Master is a opportunity to work in the field of art and in the same time to follow the evolution of society and new technologies. That’s why we chose this degree,and we don’t regret this choice,even if we have a lot on our plate…

Vanessa expects to work as a graphic designer, but she hasn’t got any particular preference for the moment.

Perhaps Delphine will specialize her skills in the field of illustration – she is very interested in children’s book.

In the next post,we will explain to you what we have to do during this first semester, and especially what is expected from us!
